A revolutionary approach to brewer’s spent grain
Brewers’ spent grain, a major by-product of the beer industry, has long been underutilised, with a large portion going to waste or being used as cattle feed. The BBC article, titled How beer sludge is being turned into vegan milk and leather, explore how scientists and startups worldwide are repurposing this waste into valuable products such as plant-based proteins, alternative leather, and even bioplastics.
As highlighted in the BBC feature, our research focuses on developing a novel bioplastic derived from brewers’ spent grain. Unlike traditional methods that require energy-intensive drying, POLYMEER has devised an innovative process to utilise wet spent grain, significantly reducing energy consumption and enhancing sustainability.
